Come Explore The Dreaming Room
Good morning friends. Today, we’re going to take a wander down the path of Dreaming and Setting our direction in life and more specifically, in our businesses…. Using Dreams to power our Entrepreneurial enterprises.
You might think – my goodness, where does this girl get her ideas?
It’s really quite simple. This past week, I’ve finally picked up a little book that’s been circling me for months – I’ve just never been in the right space to pick it up. Well, last week, I finally picked it up – and dove in… and I can’t stop thinking about it now. The book in question is ‘Awakening The Entrepreneur Within‘ by Michael Gerber. And it’s AWESOME!
Michael talks about starting a business, and he encourages people to create a Dreaming Room – a safe place where you can allow your mind to wander, and really capture your “Why” – to identify your dreams, and get comfortable with them, so that you can really harness their power to build the best business you can. Because it all starts in your head doesn’t it?
First up, the idea of having a Dreaming Room – that is delicious! From my perspective, this process of creating a Dreaming Room process or habit, adds value to your dreams. As we grow into adults, we tend to minimize the value of our dreams – it’s almost like dreaming is the sole domain of children, and merely a waste of time for big people. Now we all know better, don’t we? (Isn’t that why we are encouraged to journal every day – so we can tap into our precious dreams?)
In addition to creating a Dreaming Room, Michael distinguishes between Personal Dreams and Impersonal Dreams… which I thought was absolutely fantastic. Most people have fairly easy access to their Personal Dreams – the big house, loving relationship, luxury car… on and on it goes (particularly in western societies). But Michael makes a really interesting distinction about Personal Dreams… they are good – don’t get me wrong – but when you achieve a big personal dream – when you get the nice car or the nice house, how do you feel? And how long do you feel that? The high might be nice but it’s temporary. How long does it last? And hour? A day? A week or even a month? Soon, you’ll find that you are suddenly looking for new goals to replace those old ones. So there is a limited effect from achieving your Personal dreams.
That’s where Impersonal Dreams come to the fore. Obviously, Impersonal dreams are dreams that are linked to people or things outside of yourself… focusing on the effect that you are able to have on others. The thing that notice from this situation is that it’s a little less cut-and-dried measuring whether you have achieved your Impersonal goals or not. And it also takes your focus off yourself and moves it out into the environment a little – it gets you “out of your head”.
So now I’ve taken my inspiration from Michael Gerber’s lead and introduced you to Personal Dreams and Impersonal Dreams – which type of dream do you think would be the most effective power sources for building your empire? While personal dreams may well be easy to tap into, can you see how much more potent Impersonal Dreams would be to empower your business?
So my challenge for you today is to identify what your Personal dreams and Impersonal Dreams are – and maybe come up with a few more Impersonal ones to strengthen your business base.
Have fun – and see how many people’s lives you can light up today
I’d love to hear your results from playing with this stuff too!
Love your work and love your life!
